Canon AE-1 35mm SLR camera with 50mm f/1.8 lens
The camera that taught a generation of hobbyists, and film-shooting beginners still buy them. Working bodies with a clean 50mm f/1.8 sell steadily; the classic shutter squeal, bad light seals or a hazy lens take a serious bite out of the price.
Estimated resale range (used)
$90 – $180
A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.
What matters when you check it
- Fire the shutter at every speed and listen for the AE-1 squeal, a common fault that costs money to repair.
- Shine a light through the lens and check for fungus, haze and stiff focusing or aperture rings.
- Open the back and inspect the light seals and mirror foam, which often turn sticky with age.
Where the number comes from
Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.
Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
