• Clearing out on a deadline you didn't set

A closing date or the end of a lease turns a slow sort into a countdown. Book the hauling before you touch a box, work back from the final walkthrough, and get in writing what empty actually means.

• Before you recycle a computer or phone

A drive you did not wipe is a copy of your life in somebody else's hands. Deleting files is not wiping.

• What to do with old pillows and bedding

Pillows, sheets, towels and blankets each leave the house a different way. Charities take some of it, textile bins take the rest, and sorting before you wash saves you a day.

• Identifying china before you sell it

The backstamp tells you the maker and the pattern. Without it, a set of plates is just a set of plates.

• The South Euclid garage problem, and how it ends

How a pickup works in South Euclid, what to sort and set aside before the truck arrives, what haulers turn away, and the questions worth asking before you book.

• Who actually takes furniture in Las Vegas

A practical walk through what happens to furniture you are done with in Las Vegas: consignment shops, donation pickup, the retailer hauling away the old set, bulk pickup, and what to check before you call anyone.

• A Buffalo realtor is for more than the listing

A practical guide for anyone clearing out a Buffalo house or apartment and choosing a real estate agent: what experience actually means here, what to ask before you book, and the warning signs worth slowing down for.

• A dumpster in Euclid, without the surprises

How a construction container actually works here: what I check before the drop, what gets turned away at the scale, and the other routes — town bulk pickup, the retailer's haul-away, a charity, a paid hauler — plus the questions to ask before you book.

• An auctioneer in Buffalo, without the surprises

What to do before you call an auctioneer in Buffalo, what sells and what gets turned away, and the questions that keep a house clearing from going sideways. I've emptied a few houses around here; this is how it goes.

• Before you order a dumpster in Cleveland

How rollaway containers work around Northlake and Cleveland: where the box can sit, what weight does to the bill, what haulers refuse, and the questions to ask before you book a drop.

• Clearing a basement you have been avoiding

A basement holds water, mold and the things nobody wanted to decide about. Get light and a path down there first, judge boxes by weight and smell before you open them, and carry the wet cardboard out the same day.

• Clearing a house when you live out of town

Clearing a house from another state is really a travel problem. A video walkthrough, a short list of things only you can handle, and local help booked ahead keep it to two trips instead of five.

• Clearing an estate: the first few days

What to do before anything is sold, donated or thrown out, and why the order matters more than the speed.

• Consigning the good stuff in Buffalo, and what you give up

How consignment really works when you're downsizing in Buffalo: what shops take and what they refuse, how the split and the waiting work, what to sort before anyone comes out, and the questions to ask before you book a pickup.

• Dividing a parent's belongings with your siblings

The argument is usually about a chair, not money. Agree on what's already promised, photograph the house before anything moves, and keep the sentimental list separate from the valuable one.

• Emptying a kitchen before a move

A kitchen has to be empty before the boxes are packed, and food can't wait. Work the pantry, the spice rack and the drawers first, then decide what's worth selling, then pack the plates so they survive the trip.

• Getting rid of old paint and household chemicals

Half-full paint cans, a propane cylinder and a shelf of mystery bottles can't go in the trash or down a drain. Find your local household hazardous waste collection before you sort anything, because the date decides the rest.

• Going through a parent's paperwork

A file cabinet is mostly junk mail and a few documents that are hard to replace. Pull the legal and financial papers first, keep the original order, and don't shred anything until you've seen the whole folder.

• How a Cleveland cleanout actually goes, hour by hour

A house clearer's practical guide to residential junk hauling in Cleveland: what crews take, how pricing drivers work, what to move to the curb first, and the questions to ask before you book a pickup.

• How much storage a Buffalo house really needs

How self storage actually works in Buffalo: what to measure before you call, which questions get you a usable unit, what facilities turn away, and how snow, salt and old basements change the plan.

• Questions to ask a Buffalo mover before you hand over a deposit

How I'd choose a mover for a Buffalo house or apartment: what the estimate should actually cover, which questions protect you, and the local details — stairs, snow, tight side streets — that quietly change the job.

• Running a garage sale to clear a house

A garage sale clears a house faster than it fills a wallet. Sort before the tables go out, price by the box, and decide what happens to the leftovers before you open, or you'll be carrying it all back inside.

• Selling records in Buffalo without getting taken

How cash buying of records works in Buffalo, what to sort before you call, what buyers routinely pass on, and the questions worth asking before anyone loads a van. Written from the clearing-out side, not the sales side.

• Selling silver flatware and old jewelry

A drawer of silver and a jewelry box look like the most valuable things in the house and are the easiest to get taken on. Sort marked from plated, keep the polish off it, and get two kinds of quote before anything leaves the house.

• Sorting a house full of photographs

Photographs are the one thing in a house you can't judge by size or weight. Start with the albums, keep the ask pile separate, and write names on the back while somebody can still answer the question.

• Sorting a record collection: the fast pass

Most of a collection is worth very little and a few records are worth a lot. The skill is separating them without listening to all of them.

• Sorting holiday decorations after the season

Holiday decorations come out once a year and go back in a hurry, which is how boxes fill up with dead light strings and three garlands nobody hangs. Sort the pile once, before it goes back on the shelf, and next December gets a lot shorter.

• Sorting tools in a garage or workshop

Rusty hand tools, dead cordless drills, a bench vise and a half-full can of old paint each leave the garage a different way. Clear the floor first and sort by type before you decide what any of it is worth.

• The Buffalo dumpster question, answered

A practical walk through renting a roll-off in Buffalo: how the box lands, what to prep before the truck shows, what gets refused at the curb, and the questions that keep the final bill from surprising you.

• The couch you want to donate, and who will actually take it

I've cleared houses in Buffalo for years. Here's how I decide which furniture is worth donating, how pickup works here, and what to ask before I book a truck.

• What Cleveland charities take, and what they turn away

How donating to a nursing home around Cleveland actually works: who to call inside the building, what they can take this week, what gets refused at the door, and the questions to settle before you load a truck.

• What a Lancaster move really costs you in time

What to sort before you call, what crews won't haul, and the questions that separate a real quote from a guess — written by someone who has emptied houses in and around Lancaster.

• What fits in a senior apartment

The room is smaller than the house and the move usually happens faster than anyone planned. Get the floor plan and the rule sheet before anything is packed, measure the furniture, and treat the rest of the house as a separate job for a later week.

• What to do with a dead refrigerator or washer

An appliance is heavy, has a cord and sometimes refrigerant, and the route out depends on whether it still works. Decide that first, then choose between the store, the utility, the scrap yard and the curb.

• What to do with a mattress nobody will take

Most charities won't take a used mattress and most haulers won't pick one up without a call first. Work through the store, the hauler and the donation desk before it ends up in the alley.

• What your National Geographic magazines are actually worth

Single issues are nearly worthless. What sells is a clean, continuous run of 50 from the sixties and seventies. Here is how to check the smell, the fold-out maps and the format before you list a box, plus the honest case for recycling it instead.

• Where to start when there is too much stuff

A house full of possessions is not one job, it is a few hundred small decisions. This is the order that keeps you from making them twice.

• Who actually hauls a treadmill away in Cheektowaga

A treadmill is heavy, awkward, and usually welcome — the trick is knowing which route to call and having it ready. Here's what to ask the town, the store, a charity or a hauler, and what gets refused.
