Vintage two-drawer metal filing cabinet, green, 1960s

Old two-drawer steel filing cabinets sell steadily as garage, craft-room and office storage. Smooth-running drawers and original paint help; rust, dents and missing handles pull the price down.

Estimated resale range (used)

$35 – $80

A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.

What matters when you check it

  • Open and close both drawers and check the slides, since dragging or bent drawers are the most common problem
  • Look for rust at the base and inside the drawers, and check whether a key for the lock still exists
  • Measure height, width and depth and note the paint color, dents and scratches so buyers can plan around them

Where the number comes from

Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.

Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
