Lane cedar chest, 1950s-60s
Aromatic cedar chest of the kind usually found in a spare bedroom or attic, sold by Lane from the 1950s through the 70s. Value tracks the model, whether the key and internal tray survived, and how the veneer and finish have held up. Clean, dry examples sell steadily; water-damaged ones are often given away.
Estimated resale range (used)
$75 – $175
A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.
What matters when you check it
- Open the lid and smell inside: musty or mildew odour means water got in and is very hard to fix
- Check the lock has its key and that the lid hinges hold it open without slamming shut
- Look along the bottom edges and back for lifting veneer, water stains and old woodworm holes
- Find the Lane label and serial number inside the lid; it dates the chest and confirms the model
Where the number comes from
Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.
Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
