VHS tapes, lot of 40, 1980s and 1990s movies

Boxes of VHS tapes are a garage and basement standard. Most lots are worth little, but sealed tapes, horror and cult titles, and anything still in its original slipcase sell separately to collectors, so it pays to sort before dumping the lot.

Estimated resale range (used)

$10 – $30

A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.

What matters when you check it

  • Pull out anything still sealed in shrink wrap or with a rental-store sticker - those sell individually.
  • Check tapes and cases for mould, damp smell or chewed tape, which spreads if stored together.
  • List the titles before selling as a lot; horror, cult and animated tapes draw the most interest.

Where the number comes from

Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.

Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
