Trek 820 mountain bike, rigid steel frame, 1990s

The 820 was Trek's long-running entry-level mountain bike, and clean 1990s steel ones have a steady following as commuters and town bikes. Frame size, drivetrain condition and whether the wheels run true set the price more than the badge.

Estimated resale range (used)

$100 – $225

A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.

What matters when you check it

  • Measure the frame from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube and give the size in centimetres, because buyers filter on it.
  • Check the chain, cassette and derailleurs for wear and rust; a worn drivetrain can cost more to replace than the bike is worth.
  • Spin both wheels looking for wobble and run the brakes and shifters through every gear before you list it.

Where the number comes from

Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.

Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
