Stihl MS 180 chainsaw, 16 inch bar

A small gas homeowner saw that sells quickly in any season because new ones are expensive. Compression, whether it starts cold, and bar and chain condition set the price; a non-running saw is worth roughly a third as much.

Estimated resale range (used)

$75 – $140

A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.

What matters when you check it

  • Try a cold start and let it idle — note whether it bogs or dies when you squeeze the trigger
  • Inspect the bar for a worn groove and the chain for stretched or missing cutters
  • Check the plastic housing and handle for cracks from being dropped, and look for fuel leaks

Where the number comes from

Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.

Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
