Shakespeare Ugly Stik fishing rod and reel combo

The Ugly Stik is the rod that survives in garages for decades, and used combos sell to casual anglers rather than collectors. A straight rod with intact guides and a reel that still turns smoothly gets the upper half of the range.

Estimated resale range (used)

$25 – $60

A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.

What matters when you check it

  • Run a finger along each guide and the tip for cracks or missing inserts; broken guides are the usual problem.
  • Turn the reel handle and check the drag and bail; a smooth reel adds most of the value.
  • Look for the rod length and action printed above the handle, and check the cork grip for rot.

Where the number comes from

Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.

Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
