National Geographic magazine back issues, 1960s-70s, box of 50

Boxes of old National Geographics are a classic attic find. Most issues are worth very little on their own, but clean runs from the 1960s and 70s with the map supplements sell to decorators and collectors as bulk lots.

Estimated resale range (used)

$15 – $35

A ballpark, not a quote. Condition moves this number a lot, and so does who turns up to buy it. It isn't an appraisal and it isn't a dealer's offer.

What matters when you check it

  • Pull out any issues from the 1920s through the 1950s, the only ones that sell individually.
  • Check that fold-out maps and supplements are still tucked inside their issues.
  • Note water damage, musty smell and torn covers; damp boxes usually go straight to recycling.

Where the number comes from

Watching what these go for, not a record of sales. The range is a judgement call from what the same thing fetches secondhand. When an item has real sources behind it, they'll be printed here with the date they were checked.

Before you sell anything, look at sold prices rather than asking prices. Asking prices are wishes; sold prices are evidence.
